This firesteel is made of ferrocerium and is a modern version of an ancient way of making fire.
Ferrocerium is a man-made metal that, when scraped very quickly produces burning fireballs of molten metal which last much longer than regular sparks. They easily ignite well prepared and chosen tender.
These take a bit more technique to use than regular Light My Fire type of Ferro rods. These require a quick, firm scrape with a hacksaw blade, spine of a knife or amost any sharp edge.
