Bark River Knives: Grasso Bolo

22nd Apr 2014

We asked Mike Stewart of Bark River Knives about the Grasso Bolo, and this is what he said.

The name comes from a collaboration of design between Mike Stewart and and his good friend, Mike Grasso

One handle size which is correct for a heavy chopper. There are different blade lengths of the same basic Bolo design.

The Bolo is knife whose sweet spot for chopping is from the center of the widest part of the blade to the rear of the blade. It works very well in a snap cut, a tightening up on the handle just before impact so you are not doing all the work, but the blade is doing the work.

Each Bolo model has its own sweet spot, but it is always in the same spot. It is made longer as the blade gets longer. The velocity becomes greater as the blade gets longer. They become more efficient for slashing and chopping as the knife gets longer.

It is surprising the amount of work you can do with the shorter blade. It is more compact and easier to carry. The design was worked on for a long time. There is not too much the blade will not cut through. In the field almost anything you encounter you will be able to cut through with very little effort.
