    Incredible knife and steel

Posted by David Hess on 22nd May 2023

This is, to me, about the perfect sized knife for a general purpose EDC knife. I love that it has the sharper tip like the paramilitary series knives over the semi blunt tip of the Endura and delica line (I have both of those as well and they’re great but I prefer the finer tip since I’m not generally prying into stuff to need the stronger blunt tip). I also am a huge fan of the blue color FRN scales Spyderco have the K390 series of knives. The lock is nice too and works well using either hand which cannot be said about their compression lock. It does however not have the smoothness of the compression or ball bearing lock when opening. There’s definitely much more resistance and you have to really be on your game to do a good Spydie flick with the lock back knives. LoL On to the heart of the knife, the steel. For those who don’t know Hitachi made K390 is a REALLY REALLY good steel. It’s very hard and holds a great edge for a really long time and it’s still fairly tough as well. Yes it’ll chip before a softer steel but it’s far from fragile. K390 has some of the best and highest edge retention tests even amongst the super high end steels. And for the price of these is by far the best steel you can get! These are barely more than S30V and VG10 knives and K390 blows them away in performance. The other thing I love about K390 is that with some use in the kitchen with certain foods it gets a gorgeous well used looking patina.
